Actually Sach, I can think of a few more sports where there is alot of "play acting" involved as well. The most extream of course is WWF Wrestling. But some people would not quite classify that as an actual sport event. And then there is Basketball NBA. In some games that I have seen, some of the players will literally glue their butts on the floor as well...until the referee sees them and declares it a foul play, similar to the "injuries" suffered in soccer games.
I suppose you are kinda right that with most soccer players, they tend to be more focused on personal glory and popularity index with the viewers. Nowhere is this more apparent that with David Beckham ! He can choose to play for a lesser known US team and he would still be a star in his own rights !!.. well he and his wife Posh Spice !

I can't say I'm much of a soccer fan. The idea of watching a 90 minute game that can end in a nil all draw is just not my idea of return on investment. But having said that, I did enjoy the recent World Cup, well up until the point when Australia was robbed by bad refereeing.
That brings up another point, the outcome of a soccer match is too dependent on the quality of the refereeing as it is such a low scoring game. The allowance or disallowance of a penalty or goal can change the outcome of the game.
