Excellent analysis of the consumer psyche Mavis ! I'm of the mindset of value for money. It's good to buy quality, to a certain extent. For designer products whose price tag far exceeds its quality, then that's a no go zone for me. You would agree that some designer products are priced to the stratosphere just to create an illusion of exclusivity.

I think there is a threshold where you get what you pay for. A brand will stand by their quality, and life of product. The last thing you want to hear is that a Nike shoe or Dell monitor is just going to fall apart within months of a purchase. Then there is a threshold you cross where you can pay hideous amounts for a product, where production is limited and demand is high and where people have more many than sense, and are willing to shell out huge amounts of money for a good, that may have cost very little to manufacture.

I agree with you both that the balance between quality and price, is a good base quotient for determining how much to pay for an item.

However there is always the factor of personal preferance. Thats the one that is difficult to put on a formula on. Because if you like something, you would tend to be willing to pay a higher price for it, verses someone who thinks that the same item is just so-so to them. So while the quality vs price quotient remains the same, the varying factor for pricing an item, is to me, personal preferance.
