This thread discusses the Content article: How to live long and wellWow ! What a fantastic article ! You've clearly given this a lot of thought. To some extent, I do agree with your friend. What matters more is quality of life right ? Sometimes living too long is not necessarily such a good thing. This is especially so when we are over-populating the Earth as it is.

Hey Mavis,
I agree with your buddy who proclaims, that you are 'here for a good time not a long time'. I think I have been heard to say that a couple times too!
As a species, our lifespan I think maxes out between 70 and 80. Beyond that I think we become a liability. I feel there comes a point, where physically you may be in good shape that is heart is in good order, liver working well but then other faculties start fading ie eyes, hearing, mobility. Where then is the quality?
If medicine and technology advances to a stage, where it allows me to drive, see the world and in some small way contribute to society, I am all for living to a ripe old age, if not I would be happy to go meet my maker earlier.

You see, one of the things that the Singapore goverment is trying to implement, is to only allow us to withdrawl our superannuation (CPF) at age 67. So they are essentially saying that in general, since people's life expectancy is around 80 years old, so people should be able to work till 67 years old, get their money and still be able to enjoy it !
I seriously beg to differ and the idea of having to work at age 60 even depresses me, unless if its flipping burgers at MacD..thats about all the stress I can manage by then, I think !
By the time I am 60, I hope to be able to enjoy life or do what 67% of the people always say they want to do in their lifetime (Take a round the world trip) and still be able to enjoy it with no walking stick !

Governments around the world are encouraging their citizens to keep on working. I agree, it's good to keep your brain functioning. Depends on your lifestyle as well I guess. If you have the funds to retire early, do it, but for most us, working into our late 60s will be mandatory with a spiralling cost of living.

I think the Singapore government's proposal is unfair. Sure, allow people who want to, to keep working but they should not force people to keep working by preventing them from withdrawing their CPF.
