Apple iPodCould it actually be true ? Apple is actually upgrading their iPods after a two year hiatus ? I don't count the intermediate tweaks as real upgrades. Basically the main iPod (the Generation 5.5 video iPod) has not seen a real upgrade since October 2005. I should know as I have been waiting since then to upgrade my Generation 4 iPod with a true fullscreen iPod.

The latest report from AppleInsider is very promising assume that their sources are correct. AppleInsider is predicting that Apple will unveil a range of new iPods next month, in time for the Christmas season.

More significantly is these iPods will run a version of Mac OS X as the iPhone does. That could have huge ramifications for the user experience. A Mac OS X derived iPod OS will feature much more interactivity than the current menu structured interface.

Mac OS X enabled iPods will really allow Apple to breakaway from the competition as they have the advantage of a strong multimedia enabled OS where all the other portable players running stripped operating systems with very limited capabilities.

UPDATE :  Ars Technica brings us news of an Apple special event on September 5th which is the likely announcement date of the new iPods.
